Now all I want is a way to get the behaviour of the OS9 Finder.

The OSX Finder is seriously flawed.

...and this for everyone who suffers from the silly gaudy childish look of OS X and misses the clean elegance of OS 9 (it not necessarily the extension conflicts and the lousy task-threading).

    1) The Classic Platinum Theme (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15581). Installable on OS X using either unsanity.com's ShapeShifter or Duality 4

    2) X-Assist (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10519) or ASM (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10410) to give you an application switching menu in your menubar.

    3) FruitMenu (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12974) to give you back an editable / customizable Apple Menu, to give you a hierarchical menu-view of System Prefs so you don't have to launch the entire %&## System Preferences pane and then reach with your mouse a second time to invoke the specific PrefsPane you want. And to use as a launcher.

    4) WindowShade X (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12243), to be able to minimize windows the classic Macintosh way, not like some Windows PC-wannabe. (Will also minimize-in-place to a small icon)

    5) PullTab (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/18606), to pry that damn Dock's filthy hands off the keystoke combo Command-Tab, thus freeing it up for apps with original rights to it, like FileMaker Pro.

    6) To get your Trash can onto the Desktop where it belongs, there are several apps that purport to be able to do so, but I prefer to just use TinkerTool to make everything visible in the Finder, then make an alias to .Trash and put the alias on the Desktop. Find a nice MacOS 9ish Trashcan icon on the internet and paste.

    7) Now to dispense with the godforsaken Dock itself. Two choices: you can minimize it practically out of existence by pinning it to the left edge of your screen and then edit com.apple.dock.plist in a text editor, manually changing the tilesize parameter to 1, which will give you a Dock about the size of a pinhead in a place where you won't mouse-over on it very often by accident; or you can nuke it entirely. To nuke it entirely, first copy Dock.app from /System/Library/CoreServices and make that copy a startup item for every user account on your machine (towards the top of the list); then make an AppleScript consisting of tell application "Dock"; quit; end tell, save it as an application, and add that to your startup items (towards the end); then, finally, sudo rm the original Dock.app from within CoreServices. Hickory Dickory, baby :)

Ah, that blue ribbon is handsome. I'm still a few posts short of 500, but now I can upload my avatar early! :D

On the front page, I had a spinning beachball for a few minutes and could not exit. Doing the software update which included Safari and Java seemed to solve this problem, but I'm not sure if that was the cause.

Thanks for the input, but that's not the issue here. My computer was running perfectly, no beachballs, and I was still able to perfectly contact and load every other site at that time, and DownForEveryone said that the site was down for them too.

Cool so the votes are towards an icekey.

I guess I should try to get one off ebay then.

The thing about this two keyboards is that they are not easily available in the uk, and that they are quite expensive if you can find them online.

It was an original disk. The problem with your thread though is that I cannot get into my mac osx partition, im currently stuck on the windows side. At this point all I want to do is get back into the mac side and delete my windows side until I get back to school with the rest of my mac mini disks.

    Hi Craig

I also have a 2007 MBP which had 2 upgrades from Tiger.

When I upgraded to an SSD, I saw that my Library folder was around 12gb in size and was not getting the full benefits of SSD which had been advertised. 2gb were for email database but I had no idea of other 10gb...

The best I found was to re-install and start afresh with new installs and just the apps I needed.

I used an application which copied folder names into a text file. I formatted the computer and picked and chose the applications I wanted to reinstall.

Used TimeMachine to copy My Documents folder back and done.

Just keep in mind I used Firefox sync which copied my bookmarks, history etc. (although Add-Ons had to be reinstalled).

Couldn't have been happier to just format it rather than messing around.

Anyone else notice that they use pictures of 4G iPods? Take a look Here (http://images.apple.com/support/ipod/elements/banners/ipod_foldericon.gif).

I find that interesting...why not use newer iPods?

I have an idea! Maybe the new iPod's are so new and good, they can't mess them up enough to get the sad iPod(or the folder icon)! Maybe CQ picked out all of the iPods before they got into the hands of the web division of Apple! Maybe they just weren't in the mood to take new pictures!

Does anyone know how I could do this? Basically I have a client who wants to stream a part of their store to the general public so that people could see what happens during the day. All that I know at the moment is that it will be a flash window located on their front page. I just don't know how I should go about streaming to the web. Would I need a dedicated IP? Hardware/Server? What kind of bandwidth would this require?

I posted the same question here some time back but got no response(N) So, i done some digging for myself.

When i done mine it was for a DofE (A Charity), which meant i was after a rather free option, i found YawCam (http://www.yawcam.com/). Downloading their software, i was then able to stream live onto a html page, which they set up for free! I then embeded it into my own website.

Apple today announced (http://developer.apple.com/iphone/news/archives/december2009/#languagesupport) that it has rolled out support for six new languages and their corresponding localized App Stores for developers using iTunes Connect to submit their iPhone applications. With over 50 million users of iPhone and iPod touch in 81 countries around the world, it's more important than ever to make your app available in a user's language of choice. You can, and should, create localized versions of your app for each market you sell to. In iTunes Connect, you can customize your app's metadata, keywords and screenshots for each localized version. The newly-supported languages include:

    - Brazilian Portuguese: Brazil App Store
    - Korean: Korea App Store
    - Portuguese: Portugal App Store
    - Russian: Russia App Store
    - Simplified Chinese: China App Store
    - Swedish: Sweden App Store

A lack of localization for applications and their instructions have been cited among the many challenges (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/11/17/chinese-app-store-growing-amid-challenges/) faced by the App Store in China.

Well it sounds like you already decided on the Nano. You can't go wrong with it, as long you don't plan on expanding your music library anytime soon.
Nice noob response. :p Anyone who regularly listens to music uses playlists and rotates the music from their computer to their iPods. At any one time, no one is going to listen to their entire 20GB worth of music. They are more likely to use smart playlists and shuffle among them.

This was a rent a cop and not an Apple employee, right?

Nearly without fail, everyone who tries to enforce a photography ban is some form of rent-a-cop (or the DC Park Police, if you're downtown). In fact, he was wearing the usual RTC parking monitor garb, so yes. Paul Blart, self-appointed Apple Event Press Liaison :D

In addition to the formidable rent-a-cop contingent, there was also on hand an imposing display of armed Fairfax County (actual) Sheriffs and Reston's Finest.

They obviously think that the current IDE = fail, if they are releasing a total overhaul of the UI.

Making the IDE better will help them bring in new developers.

Xcode 3 is still a serviceable IDE, far from a "fail". The fact is it's been around since 2003 and definitely needed a refresh.

Hopefully the final release of 4 will coincide with some nice MBP updates so I have a nice reason to justify buying a new laptop. :)

Your dual 1.8 GHz machine only has a total of 4 DIMM slots.

It can hold a total of 4 GB RAM with 2 matched pairs
    of 1 GB DIMMS

You currently have 2 of your total 4 DIMM slots occupied with the stock RAM.

If you go to Crucial you need to select your model
and the appropriate offerings will be displayed.

Same thing with OWC ( www.macsales.com.)
They sell factory original Apple/Samsung RAM

If you want to add a total 1 GB you need to purchase
    a pair of 512 sticks.

RAM has gotten so affordable, you might want to hold off till you can afford a pair of 1 GB sticks
and ramp that puppy up another 2GB.

I suggest you make some wild and unsubstantiated claims about Macs and PC's or something similar to get it started with a nice big flame-war.

    How about one of these:

2.5ghz G5 is just an overclocked 2.0. Otherwise why would it need to be watercooled?

    It's about time Apple made a Phone/PDA

Apple ought just get real and start using Intel/AMD and get their new cases redesigned by Alienware. OH and get some decent games...

That sort of thing ought to do nicely. ;)

i bought myself an Logitech V500 a few months back to accompany my future Powerbook. apart from the wireless USB thing its perfect. but its sooo small and i think it has the highest DPI for any infrared mouse too, but dont quote me on that (and that was back in october).
ive had it since october, use it every single day for an hour approx and the battery is still in 'good' rating! i never knew wireless mice were so battery-friendly. man i bought 8 AAA batteries expecting it to eat through them but at this rate these will last me till a G5 PB ;)

logitech are very good with mice. kudos to them

oh and subl1me; its an amazing mouse, probably wouldnt use it for desktop PC/Mac use but for portables... yea... highly recommended.
